Subland is hidden away amongst the inauspicious surroundings of an industrial estate between Ostkreuz and Frankfurter Allee, Subland can genuinely claim to be one of Berlin’s best kept secrets. Yet once you descend the stairs into the club itself, it’s immediately apparent why clubbers from across Europe have been making this their first stop for underground dance music over the last year.
Built specifically to cope with the monstrous sub-bass from Drum & Bass and Dubstep & something severely lacking in Berlin’s techno-oriented clubs the Clear Sound rig has to be heard to be believed. ‘The Beast from the East’ as it’s affectionately known by regulars, has been graced by DJs and producers at the forefront of their sound from all corners of the globe, with most eager to return at the earliest opportunity. Subland’s low ceilings and corridors lend an intimate feel to the venue, whilst old machines and circuit boards adorn the walls, alongside striking artwork from local and international artists. Add to this the amiable bar staff serving the club’s signature ‘Mad Dog’ shots and it’s not hard to see why Subland is renowned for its friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
In stark contrast to many other clubs in the capital, Subland embraces its underground status.
